Apple-A-Day: Borough Championships

The PSAL boys borough championships tip-off this afternoon in gymnasiums across the city, and the Post and ESPN New York are picking mostly chalk. We’ll be looking to see whether Boys & Girls High School star Mike Taylor has his academic suspension lifted, and hope to have an update from Small Apple Sports’ Geoffrey Decker—who covers the Kangaroos beat for Bed-Stuy Patch—before the game.

In yesterday’s Apple, Matt Draper had word on a good weekend for Christ the King basketball. Here’s more good news on the Royals from SNY’s Adam Zagoria, who says that Jim Calhoun is in on a couple of Middle Village hoopsters.

Not sure if it bears noting, but high-profile Royals preps Sue Bird and Tina Charles graduated from Christ the King to UCONN.

In case you missed it last week, Kevin Armstrong’s story on new Super Bowl champion B.J. Raji’s roots in a Harlem church was probably my favorite media week read.

On a sober note, former Jets quarterback Ray Lucas is battling addiction to painkillers, the Daily News reports. You can offer encouragement to Lucas on his Facebook page.
